What is Tae Kwon Do?

Tae Kwon Do is a Korean martial art and Olympic sport. The name "Tae Kwon Do" is derived from "Tae,” which means to kick as with a foot, “Kwon” which derives from using “the hand” to strike or block, and “Do” which means “the way” or “the art." It can roughly be translated as "The Art of Fighting with the Fist and Foot."

Many martial arts schools limit the student’s understanding and level of focus solely on teaching the physical movements of Tae Kwon Do in order to allow the student to participate in tournaments or to protect themselves in a fight. However, the art of the Tae Kwon Do is truly much deeper than just fighting. The goal of Baker's Tae Kwon Do Center is "shim shin, soo ryun," or "the training of the mind, body, spirit, and emotions." While the physical aspects of Tae Kwon Do strengthen our body, our study of the philosophy and “words of wisdom” helps to develop character, and learn confidence, patience, control, respect, and wisdom.
